The Analysis of the region here is basically showing the 4 sub-tribes that made up the Samnites in Samnium. These Samnite subtribes were pretty much distant from the Latin tribes which later became the Romans, The map below on this page shows roughly the extent of the Samnite subtribes before the Samnites integrated with the Romans around ~290 BC. The Samnites spoke a language called Oscan which is basically an extinct Indo-European language of the Italic branch (Osco-Umbrian). Basically today's popular romance languages like Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian and even French have pretty similar Lexical similarity (meaning how far apart 2 languages are in terms of similarity) to Ancient Oscan
